How to Detect whether the Ultrasonic Module is Defective

This article applies to several products with single-mode Bluetooth modules, including mBot, Ranger, Mega, and Ultimate 2.0. The specific troubleshooting steps are based on Ranger as an example.

1. Step by Step

1.  Check whether the ultrasonic sensor is successfully powered

Connect the ultrasonic module to the mainboard and power it, then observe whether the red indicator light on the back of the module lights up normally (as shown in the figure below). If the indicator does not light up, you can replace the RJ25 wire. If the indicator still does not light up after replacing, probabily there is a problem with the sensor.

2.  Check for proper sensor connection
By default, the Ranger's ultrasonic module should be connected to port 10 of the mainboard. If you have created or modified the program by yourself, please confirm the port that the ultrasonic module is connected to is the same as that set in the program.

3.  Test if the sensor reads the value correctly in mBlock 5
  • Connect the mBot Ranger to the software, make sure the mBot Ranger is under the latest firmware, and select "Live" mode.
  • In the “Sensing” section, find the "ultrasonic sensor port 10 distance" block as shown below, and tick the checkbox on the left (the actual port connected to the module should be the same as that set on the block). At this time, shake your hand in front of and behind the ultrasonic module, observe whether the distance reading in the upper left corner can change normally.
  •  If the sensor readings remain at 0 or 400 constantly, the module may be faulty and need to be replaced.(The minimum detectable distance between the sensor and an obstacle is 3cm, please make sure not to fall below this value)

4.  If the sensor is confirmed to be faulty, please contact the support team to inquire about the parts replacement process.
